Fort Dodge, Iowa, is located along the Des Moines River. The population of just over 25,000 people is 91% Anglo American. The largest minority is African American at about 4%. Less than 3% of the population is Latin America. Gypsum and limestone mining generate the bulk of the local economy in this midwestern city. One of the state’s best golf courses is at the Country Club here. There are 32 city parks in all. The river and two creeks here make this a primary destination for river tubing aficionados. There are hiking trails in some of the town’s parks. Camp sites are not far. There are some 60 restaurants in town including several big fast food chains. Historic Central Avenue in the downtown area hosts many of these restaurants as well as a number of small boutiques and a few larger stores. There is a limited offering of performers which includes a live community theater troupe. Movie theatres can be found here as well. The Oak Hill District is home to the Blanden Memorial Art Museum. There are numerous 19th Century homes in this neighborhood. The town has approximately a dozen hotels and motels offering accommodations. There is a local public transit bus network known as the DART. The site where the Des Moines River and Lizard Creek meet was the site where the US Army built a fort in 1850. After only 3 years it was abandoned. In 1869, the town was settled and the first Gypsum manufacturing in the US west of the Mississippi River commenced at this location.
