Devonport Holidays Overview
Devonport is known as the ‘City with Spirit’ and is located on the Mersey River in the heart of the North West Coast of Tasmania. Edged on one side with the River, the ocean on the other and mountain views at the back, Davenport is a relaxed and welcoming city. The major sea gateway for Tasmania, Davenport is a thriving port.
Early explorers bypassed the Mersey River deeming it unnavigatable due to a sandbar blocking the entrance. In 1826, closer inspection by members of the Van Diemen’s Land Company named the river. The twin settlements of Formby and Torquay were established in the mid 1850s due to increased activity in the region as Timber became a profitable industry. Formby and Torquay were the beginnings of what is now known as Davenport.
Davenport is a beautiful city and is a shoppers paradise with unique boutiques and specialty shops. Take a drive through the region and discover the variety of agricultural produce from orchard fruit to fields of vegetables such as onions, potatoes, peas, carrots and beans.
