Davao City Holidays Overview
The city of Davao is located on the south eastern portion of the Mindanao Island in the Philippines. Davao is an urban metropolis that functions as the financial, economic and educational center of the island. The city is equipped with a bustling airport and seaport which handle a substantial amount of cargo. In recent years this city which has been included in the list of ‘the Asian Cities of the Future’ has emerged as an important hub for business and investment in the Philippines. Moreover this city which is home to the Philippines’ highest peak Mount Apo and the country’s most renowned dive spots as well as the endangered Philippine Eagle is also an important hub for tourism. Davao city is the regional center of the Davao region and the history of this region can be traced to the ancient tribes that occupied the region for centuries. These ethnic groups like the Bagobos, the Mandayas, the Mansakas, the Atas, the Kalagans, the Tagakaolos and the Mangguangans continue to inhabit the region until today. The Spanish influence in Davao was experienced in 1848, when a expedition led by Don Jose Uyanguren established a Christian settlement in the mangrove swamps which are now are a part of the Bolton Riverside. Davao was at that time ruled by a Muslim leader called Datu Bago. Datu Bago was defeated by Don Jose Uyanguren who renamed the region Nueva Guipúzcoa after his home in Spain but Uyanguren’s efforts to develop the region were not very successful. In the early 20th century the Americans arrived in Davao and helped improve the region’s transportation and communication facilities. However the credit for the development of Davao can be attributed to a Japanese entrepreneur, Kichisaburo Ohta who was at this time allowed to establish abacá and coconut plantations in the region. These plantations required labor and Ohta imported several Japanese plantation workers to work on the land. They in turn established a Japanese settlement on the island which had its own school, newspapers, embassy and even a Shinto shrine. In addition to the plantation economy, the Japanese also established the copra, timber, fishing and trading industries in Davao.Te native Filipinos learned much from them as the region prospered due to its agrarian economy. Davao was instituted as a city in March 1937 and in the late sixties it was divided into three separate provinces namely, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental. During World War II, the Japanese occupied by the city after they captured it in December 1941 this occupation continued until 1945 when the city was liberated by the combined force of the Americans and the Philippine Commonwealth forces. Davao city enjoys a year round warm, balmy climate which is characterized by temperatures that range between 20ºC and 32ºC.
