Darwin Holidays Overview
Darwin is located at the Top End of the Northern Territory at the edge of the Timor Sea. Darwin’s natural harbour was discovered in 1839 by Captain John Lort Stokes of the ‘Beagle’ and named the harbour after British evolutionist, Charles Darwin. The town of Darwin was founded in 1869 and was originally called Palmerston before being renamed Port Darwin in 1911. The discovery of gold at Pine Creek in 1871, 200 kilometres south of Darwin dramatically increased the town’s growth.
A key moment in Darwin’s history as the city was the scene of the first enemy attack on Australian soil in WWII. The site of one of the most devastating natural disasters, Cyclone Tracy swept through leaving a destructive path in the early hours of Christmas Day in 1974. Over 30,000 people were evacuated, but most returned to resume their lives in Darwin.
One of the biggest attractions is the climate. The perfect weather from May to September with mild days and balmy nights in this the ‘Dry Season’ while you enjoy the great outdoors. The hottest months are in October and November and the coolest are in June and July. Darwin has beautiful weather throughout the year with the summer not too hot and the winter not too cold.

The Darwin Festival in August is a good excuse to have a good time and party. Held over 18 days and nights, with 15 venues, a staggering 66 events not to mention the 916 artists from the Territory, Australia and the World, the Darwin Festival is one not to miss. One of Darwin’s premier events is the Royal Darwin Show held in July. Three days of entertainment, displays including horticulture, art, craft, cooking and photography where the city meets the country. Take the family and enjoy the sideshow rides, live entertainment, equestrian events and the variety of food and drink showcasing the multicultural nature of Darwin. The kids will love the animal nursery and marvel at the working stockhorses, show jumping and polocrosse events. The Fireworks Finale closes the Royal Darwin Show in spectacular fashion.
