Damascus Holidays Overview
Damascus is the capital of Syria and its largest city.Damascus lies about 80km away from the Mediterranean Sea and is located on a plateau that is 2200 feet above sea level. Damascus which is often credited with being the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world is divided into two sections, an old walled city which lies on the south bank of the Barada River and a newer more urbane section which occupies the other areas of the city. The old walled city is the heart and soul of Damascus, which is populated with a labyrinth of narrow alley ways and old homes. The old walled city has a medieval air about it and continues to be the religious, commercial and social center of Damascus. Historical records indicate that Damascus was established between 10,000 and 8000 BC and the city has been occupied by various global empires down the ages like the Greeks, the Romans and the Christians though Damascus served the site of the first Islamic empire when it was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate in 634 CE.The city gained much power and prestige during the reign of Umayyad Caliphate which lasted from 661 to 750. During this time Damascus was the capital of a vast empire that extended from Spain to India. Today Damascus is a bustling city where the old world peacefully co-exists with the modern world, and souqs, mosques and hammams( bath houses) stand cheek by jowl with hotels, restaurants, fashionable shopping districts and European inspired Art Deco residential neighborhoods.
