Cordoba Holidays Overview
The city of Cordoba, Argentina, is 700 km northwest of this country's capital. It is located in the middle of the country along the Suquía River at the foothills of the Sierras Chicas mountains. With approximately 1.5 million people, it is the second largest city in Argentina after Buenos Aires. In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, there were waves of immigrants arriving in this city from various European countries. Some 40% of the population here is descended from these immigrants.
The average high temperature in the warmest month (January) is 31 degrees Celsius. The coldest average temperature is 3 degrees in the colder months. There are often cool winds from Antarctica to the south. In 1573, the Spanish began efforts to settle the area and expel the aboriginal people living here.
In 1599, the Jesuits established a mission and within a decade a College that would, in 1613, become the University of Cordoba. Today, the 4th oldest university in all of the Americas is the National University of Cordoba. In the 20th Century, national political turmoil was born here several times. It is here that the 1955 mutiny was launched that overthrew Juan Peron. The protests leading to the 1973 elections ending military rule also began here in the late 1960s.
Fishing, hiking and gliding are among the sports enjoyed in the nearby surroundings. The city itself is filled with historic Spanish colonial structures alongside modern buildings. More than 80 offerings of accommodations can be found, including a spa resort, luxury hotels, vacation apartments, cabins and hostels.
There are well over 100 eateries, some offering professional tango shows and dinner theatre. There are numerous live theatres and an active night life for live music and dancing in Cordoba. There are 3 taxi services and buses for travel. An airport as well as bus service provides access directly to and from this city.
