Coober Pedy has evolved since the first Opal was found in 1915 into one of the most unique places in Australia and even the world. A multicultural melting pot, Coober Pedy has a relaxed and friendly lifestyle showcasing a diversity of people. Due to the high temperatures in Summer, Coober Pedy is best known for its style of underground living. Explore underground homes, museums, opal shops, art galleries and also the opal mines.
Arid desert country surrounds Coober Pedy. Water is precious in this Outback town with low rainfall, you will find mainly Australian native and desert plants in Desert Cave gardens. The Sturt Desert Pea is South Australia’s floral emblem and can be seen flowering spectacularly in gardens.
Originally known as Stuart Range Opal Field, Coober Pedy was renamed in 1920. Coober Pedy is believed to be an anglicised version of the Aboriginal words ‘kupa piti’, that is assumed to mean ‘white man in hole’.
