Colorado Springs Holidays Overview
Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the second largest population center in this southwestern state of the US. Roughly 600,000 people inhabit the greater metropolitan area. It is at the base of the southern part of the Rocky Mountains. The first European community was founded here in 1871 as a resort town. In the late 1800s, it grew rapidly with the Gold Rush. The richest mine on Earth was found near here at Cripple Creek. From the latter half of the 20th Century on, much of the economy is generated by the several military bases in the vicinity. In the winter, low temperatures here average -10 degrees Celsius. The high temperature rarely passes 30 degrees Celsius. The population is approximately 80% white and 12% Latin American; the remaining 8% is widely mixed. There is a very limited public bus system. There are urban and rural bike lanes here, a spray play ground and 4 outdoor pools operated by the city. An ice skating rink is also under municipal jurisdiction along with numerous parks. The city runs 2 golf courses. This is a great jumping off location to explore the expansive natural areas of the south western United States. However, there are also a number of historic areas located in the downtown.
