A visit to Cobar is to discover the rich mining history in this Outback town. The region’s prosperity was built on a thriving mining industry dealing in copper, lead, silver, zinc and gold. A major tourism destination, there are many attractions and activities to enjoy. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area and over 200 bird species for lovers of nature.
In 1870, a Copper Lode was discovered in Cobar. This was linked to the forces of drought and flood that dominate the Western Plains. Charles Campbell, Thomas Hartman and George Gibb were working in the Bourke district when widespread flooding forced them south in 1969. As they followed the path that local aboriginals used between watering halls, guided by two aboriginals they discovered blue/green streaks in the clay bank of the waterhole. Later testing of the samples showed that they were Copper.

In November, the Nymagee CWA Flower Show, Exhibition and Outback Music Festival is held and is a bi-annual event. The birthplace of ‘Country Rock n Roll’, Re-Mains called Nymagee their spiritual birthplace. More recently the Lonely Horse Band credited the village as integral in their development. Ten years on, the Festival is now a birthday bash to celebrate the life and friendships of their town.

Cobar Show is held in May each year and has been running for 57 years. The strong historical links with agriculture and mining feature in special attractions such as the motocross, fireworks and the celebrity ride-on mower race. Enjoy lively entertainment, displays, the thrill of the rides and sideshow alley. A good time out for the whole family, the children won’t leave without their showbags.

The Festival of the Miners Ghost has a range of activities with an open day at the Peak Gold Mine, street theatre, Markets in the Park and fireworks.
