The inland port city of Chongqing is located along the northern part of the Yangtze River, in fact this city which has the largest municipal area and population in China, is situated on the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in south west China.Chongqing was actually until 1997 classified as a city which was included in the Sichuan province which it neighbors. The city in fact shares it borders with several Chinese provinces like the Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Shaanxi provinces. Chongqing is thought to have been the home of the Ba people who were believed to have lived here during the 11th century BCE. After which the city experienced the rule of various Chinese dynasties like the Qin, the Sui, the Southern Song, the Yuan and the Ming. Ever since it was established more than 3000 years ago, this city which is home today to more than 30 million people who belong to various different ethnicities has been renamed often through the ages. The city has been called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou, before it received the moniker of Chongqing nearly 800 years ago. Today Chongqing like many other cities in China is a modern city whose landscape is dotted with towering skyscrapers. Chongqing which is an important center for trade and commerce is also considered to be China’s fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. Chongqing is known for its abundant natural resources like water and mineral deposits given its strategic position on the Yangtze River which is also known as the Golden River in China.

Spring Festival The Spring Festival in Chongqing begins on the eve of the lunar new year and ends with the celebration of the lantern festival which is typically celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. These festivals are generally celebrated between mid-january to mid-February and feature many festivities and lantern dances. The Three Gorges International Tourism Festival This festival is usually celebrated in May and it seeks to highlight the Three Gorges Dam project which is the major attraction in the area as it is the largest hydro power project in the world. Tourists are usually offered a chance to soak in the gorgeous scenery that adorns the canyons of the Yangtze River which are known as the Three Gorges. This dam which is one and a half miles wide and more than 600 feet high and cost $37 billion to build has created a reservoir that will enable 10,000-ton ocean-going freighters to sail directly into China’s interior for six months of each year. This controversial dam which has also caused much ecological damage is expected to greatly enhance China’s trade.This festival which features dragon boat races and sightseeing tours is a kind of PR exercise for the project which has attracted much world-wide criticism. The Autumn Harvest Festival This festival is held during October and features drumming, fire dragon dances and bull fights but the festival is also a courtship festival during which young people couple up. Many villages in Chongqing municipality erect large swings for the event. Young couples usually swing on these swings during the festival.
