Charlotte Holidays Overview
Charlotte, North Carolina, is populated by more than 680,000 people. It is the largest city in the state. It is at the base of the Appalachian Mountain chain. The greater metropolitan area may include more than 2 million people and straddles the border of South Carolina, this state’s neighbour to the south. Several sources consider it one of the best US cities in which to reside. Many outdoor attractions are nearby. The area was first settled in the middle of the 18th Century. Despite having named itself Charlotte in honor of the wife of King George III, in 1775, it declared itself independent from England. This was the year before the 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence and broke with the crown in July.
Roughly half of the population is Anglo American and 33% of African descent. Latin Americans make up 11% of the population and the rest are of other ethnic groups and mixed. Most of the city’s population has migrated here from other locations. A light rail system, historic trolleys, shuttles and buses combine to form the Charlotte Area Transit System. An elevated roadway circles the downtown area.
There are several large shopping malls in this city and its surrounding towns. Various sports teams are based here as well as numerous cultural venues and several universities and colleges. Restaurants offer cuisine from around the world and there are a variety of clubs and bars, particularly in the downtown area. Today, the Queen City (as it is called) is the second largest financial centre in the US after New York.
The downtown is home to tree lined areas and historic buildings as well as towering skyscrapers. Children and family attractions can be found here as well as a variety of pubs serving regional and local micro brews and other beverages. The climate is fairly moderate with average afternoon highs in winter at 11 degrees Celsius and the summer average high 32 degrees C.
