Charleville Holidays Overview
Charleville is an attractive town on the banks of the Warrego River and is located 750 kilometres from Brisbane. With a population of over 3,500, Charleville is the largest town in the region. The region has four artesian bores and water is essential for survival with temperatures ranging up to 40 degrees in summer. First explored by Edmund Kennedy in 1847, his expedition through the region was specific to identifying the flow of the rivers and waterways. During his expedition Kennedy passed within 10 kilometres of the present site of Charleville. The region was settled during the mid 1860s with a pub and a general store. By the late 1880s, Charleville was a thriving town with a brewery, cordial factory, four sawmills and three butcheries. Today, the town is home to both the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the School of Distance Education. A delightful piece of the Outback, Charleville has many high points in history including the home of Cobb and Co.’s largest running coach making factory, and the site of the rainmaking experiment using the Vortex Gun. http://www.murweh.qld.gov.au
