Chandigarh Holidays Overview
Chandigarh which is also known as ‘City Beautiful’ enjoys the position of being the first planned city in India. After India gained Independence from the British in 1947, the young country’s first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru took a personal interest in the creation of the city of Chandigarh because he wanted it to symbolize a new modern and progressive Indian state. The initial master plan of the city was laid out by noted American architect-planner Albert Mayer while famed Swiss born French architect and planner Le Corbusier designed several buildings and layouts of the city. The city today serves as the capital of two prosperous Indian states Punjab and Haryana and is also a union territory which is administered by the central government. Chandigarh is located in the foothills of the Shivalik mountain range which are the southernmost mountains of the Himalayan system. The city is named after the Hindu Goddess, Chandi. In fact an old temple dedicated to this goddess of supreme reality is located at a distance of 15 km from the city of Chandigarh. Chandigarh is laid out in a grid system and the city is divided into 47 self contained ‘sectors’ or neighborhoods which are entirely self sufficient as they are equipped with their own shops, educational and health care institutions, places of worships, recreational facilities and green spaces. The city is actually divided into four main areas of activity, the capital complex which is located in the northern part of the city and is home to the Secretariat, Legislative Assembly and High Court. Sector 17 which is administrative center of the city that houses the state government institutions as well as shopping malls, offices and banks. The educational hub of the city which contains several engineering is located in its western section while the eastern section of the city is its industrial center.
