Cancun Holidays Overview
Cancun is located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula facing east onto the Caribbean. It is known for its seaside strip of resort hotels along sandy white beaches. It is famed as a destination for sports fishing and for honeymoon getaways. Diverse water sports and amusements are available as well as international cuisine, bars and dancing. Night life continues here into the early morning hours. The surf at the beaches can be strong. Lifeguards are only on duty at some of the major hotels. Traveller’s are best off drinking only bottled water and avoiding salads and washed foods outside of the larger hotels. This city was planned as the result of a 1967 study around how to attract tourism to coastal Mexico. Prior to 1970, only a handful of people inhabited the area. They made their livelihood from fishing. There was also a military base. Today there are roughly 750,000 inhabitants. Some 150 hotels range broadly in prices. Several large malls and amusement parks cater to tourists in addition to the water and its beaches. This is an area very much affected by hurricanes. To avoid possible storms it is best to not visit between June and November.
