Calgary Holidays Overview
The city of Calgary is located in Alberta Province in western Canada. It is the third largest city in the country, with more than 1 million inhabitants. It sits at the foot of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Some 5 million tourists visit the city annually. The first settlement here was established in 1875 as a frontier outpost of the North-western Mounted Police. The city has a mass transit system combining bus routes and an urban light rail. There are also 16 kilometres of enclosed walkways connecting most of the downtown buildings on 15 networked paths. This allows for travel on foot, even on cooler evenings. The weather in this city is unpredictable. While not fiercely cold, even in the summer months it has been known to snow. Similarly, winter days can be warm and pleasant in this sunniest of all Canadian cities. Along with cattle, oil and gas have been key to the local economy here since their discovery in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Today, there are diverse businesses in this modern city. This is one of the most affordable cities in North America and the 3rd most ethnically diverse urban centre in Canada. It is most known as a jumping off place for winter sports and eco-tourism.

holidays - Top Events
Perhaps the most popular event in this city is the Calgary Stampede. This 10 day event is an annual mid-summer festival since 1912 in Stampede Park. Chuck Wagon races, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo, agricultural exhibits and live music are some aspects of the event. It is right along the light rail system’s route. This is one of this country’s largest outdoor, yearly events. (http://calgarystampede.com/) Since 2005, the city has been home to the Blues Fest, a full week of Blues music in early August. A Mid Winter Blues Fest is held in February as well. These annual music evens, celebrating Canadian artists in this American-born genre, are organised by the city’s Blues Music Association.
