The town was first established by the ‘Van Diemen’s Land Co’ in 1827 as a port and did not progress in its first 100 years of settlement. First known as Emu Bay, it was renamed Burnie after William Burnie, a co-director of the van Diemen’s Land Co in 1828. The heart of early white settlement in North West Tasmania, this heritage is on display and features significant historical buildings throughout the city.

The Rally Tasmania Classic is based in Burnie and is held in February each year. This event has celebrated 30 years and covers 100 kilometres in a radius of the City over three days. The Rally covers miraculous terrain from spectacular mountains to valleys and returns to Burnie each day.
