Buffalo Holidays Overview
The city of Buffalo is located in the north of the westernmost part of New York State. It is on the east side of Lake Erie, the easternmost of the Great Lakes. Winters are usually long and cold in this area that borders on Ontario, Canada. The Niagara River passes by this city. Niagara Falls, famed destination for honeymoon couples and daredevils is a short drive away. Roughly half of the population is of European descent. 40% is African American. Some 10% is composed of other minorities, including around 1% aboriginal peoples. This was once an industrial manufacturing area. With the decline of the iron and auto industries, the population has also declined since its heyday in the 1950s. Today, biological and life science industries appear to be on the rise. The city is abundant in parks as well as historic buildings. It is home to dozens of art galleries and a thriving music scene. There are several college campuses here which may contribute to the thriving nightlife. Bars and clubs remain open until 4 AM. Restaurants of diverse cuisines can be found here. A public bus system and a metro line that is just over 10km in track length makes travel possible without a vehicle. The city has a professional hockey, basketball and Lacrosse teams as well as college and other leagues. There are several gaming casinos in the area. Accommodations can be found in and around this city for a wide range of budgets. It is the second largest city in the Empire State.

Celebrating its famous food specialty, there is an annual Buffalo Wing Festival on Labour Day weekend (at the start of September). It is a charity event that began in 2002. Eating contests, foot races, sauce making competitions and live music are among the goings on at this new traditional event. (http://www.buffalowing.com/) An older tradition that began in 1960, is the Allentown Art Festival. This is held in the historic and thriving neighborhood of Allentown. More than 400 artists display their work in a judged street festival on a June weekend each year. Ten percent of festival proceeds go to art scholarships for local area student artists. There are Irish theatrical performances, exhibits on Irish heritage, food and drink and live music. A Parade of 32 Counties is carried out bearing the flags of the Irish counties. It is principally sponsored by the numerous Irish-run businesses and organisations in the area. This event occurs on Hertel Avenue, in the Little Italy section of the city. Bocce ball contests, food and drink and live music are part of the festivities, as well as the election of the Festival Queen and an Italian Idol contest.
