Broken Hill Holidays Overview
Broken Hill is one of the largest regional centres in New South Wales. Located on the edge of the NSW Outback, Broken Hill is a thriving community. A city with links to the mining and mineral industries, Broken Hill cherishes its heritage. A walk through the town lovingly restored historical buildings and monuments are evident. In the early years of Broken Hill, it was known foremost for its mineral wealth, but also for the severity of its dust storms. The dust storms destroyed vegetation around the town and led to a shortage of food which led to a typhoid epidemic in 1888 that killed 128 people. In 1892 a private company built the Stephens Creek Reservoir and reticulation systems to the town and mines. Broken Hill has flourished and their vegetation replenished due to the increase in available water. Street signs throughout the town display the names of significant people from early alderman’s to mining and mineral officials. Recreation reserves were planted and available for public use. They say ‘Beyond the Darling River on the edge of the Sundown’ is where you will find Broken Hill, at the edge of the Outback. http://www.brokenhill.nsw.gov.au
