Brest Holidays Overview
Brest is located in Brittany, in the northwest corner of France. The centre is built around the deep harbour known as the Rade de Brest, and key buildings such as the naval base and the Port de Commerce can be found along the waterfront. Formerly one of France’s most important naval and commercial ports, Brest was heavily bombed by the allies during the Second World War and a large percentage of its buildings were totally destroyed. Rebuilding after the war was a rapid as homes had to be provided for the city’s inhabitants, and the majority of Brest now features mid twentieth century architecture. Modern Brest is still a significant port and military base, and it is very common to see uniformed sailors strolling around the town alongside the university’s student population. The craggy Ile d’Ouessant just of the coast of Brest, is a windswept island with traditional houses that is well worth a visit.
