Blackwater Holidays Overview
Blackwater is a modern mining town located 190 kilometres west of Rockhampton on the Capricorn Highway. The town’s name originated from the colour of the local water supply caused by the tea-trees. The highway brushes past the outskirts of Blackwater, so that you could almost miss it within only the motels and roadhouses visible along the highway. Hidden behind, is a town that was originally designed to hold 20,000 people. The Blackwater Township is located on the original “Blackwater Run”, a pastoral block taken up by Henry Crew and Richard Lanyon in 1882. Blackwater was gazetted and laid out in 1886 and sale of land followed from December of that year. Significant properties taken up from 1886 were ‘Jellinbah’, ‘Curragh’, ‘Bonnie Doon’ and ‘Blackwater’, each playing noteworthy roles in the development of the coal industry. Today, Blackwater is still known as a coal mining town and the majority of residents are employed in the mines and is known as the Coal Capital of Australia. The coal mines produce millions of tonnes of coking and steaming coal each year with exports around the world.
