Birmingham Holidays Overview
Birmingham is located in the state of Alabama in the deep south of the United States. It is the largest city in this state and is located at the base of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. There is a wide range of cuisines and a diverse nightlife. Accommodations in this city are fit for all price ranges.
Several large, landscaped golf courses can be found here. Various expansive natural areas for hiking, canoeing and exploration are within easy reach of this city. Camping, hunting and horseback riding abound in these nearby parks, the closest of which is under 9 kilometres from the city center with approximately 16 kilometres of hiking trails.
The area was first settled in 1813 as Elytown. During the Civil War, northern forces ignored the area as a tiny and poor village; thus the historic architecture remained intact and still stands in the downtown area. The city's growth was fueled by iron, coal and other important resource deposits.
The African American population in this city was at the heart of the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s. The town had been considered one of the most racially polarized in the country. In 1979, its first black mayor was elected.
About 300,000 people inhabit the city today. The greater metropolitan area is home to 1 million people, a quarter of the state’s population. More than 70% of the inhabitants of this city are of African descent.
Ths city is a thriving business centre with a diverse economy. In recent years the downtown has been undergoing reconstruction and new retail shops and restaurants have been opening. The winters are mild and the summers here are hot and humid.
