Barcaldine is an iconic outback town and is located in Central West Queensland approximately 440 kilometres west of Rockhampton. The region is one of the largest cattle producing areas in Central Western Queensland. Barcaldine is a productive sheep, wool and macropod harvesting industry received its name from a nearby sheep station ‘Barcaldine Downs’.

From small beginnings, Barcaldine has a notable placement within Australian politics as it was integral to the formation of the Australian Labour Party. In 1891, a sheep shearer’s strike involving over 1,300 people marched, fighting for their rights to work only an 8 hour day.

Each October, join the Angel Flight Outback Trailblazers on the Four Leaf Clover Challenge. An experience of seven days and nights exploring bush roads with stunning scenery, waterways and wildlife is exhilarating. Special events incorporated into the Challenge are a ‘Bards and Bushies’ dinner and show, ‘Night Golf’ and ‘Muttaburrasaurus Dinosaur Dinner’. Participate in the Great Outback Riverboat Races, climb Starlight’s Lookout and meet bush characters in Outback pubs. The Challenge supports “Outback Angel’s” a national group of aircraft owners and pilots who donate their aircraft and services to fly medically needy people for treatment.

The Tree of Knowledge festival is held each May and celebrates Australian history and the Great Shearers Strike in 1891. A full weekend of family fun, the celebrations centralised on the eucalyptus papuana tree which is located at the front of the railway station. This community event embraces an assorted range of activities. Browse the markets; enjoy a full afternoon of country horse racing at the Tree of Knowledge Cup, culminating in the Highway Street party. A variety of food and music is available throughout the night. Catch the action on Sunday at the one eighth mile V8 RevFest followed by the traditional Labor Day March and Street Parade at the Showgrounds with more family fun and entertainment.
