Ayr is a lively farming town at the mouth of the Burdekin River 85 kilometres south of Townsville. The town centre is colourful with shops, restaurants and hotels. Surrounded by the natural beauty of rivers, creeks and estuaries with unspoiled mangroves and long stretches of sandy beaches, Ayr has available something for everyone, from fishing to windsurfing and water skiing.
The Burdekin River was first discovered by Captain Wickham and initially named Wickham River and later changed to Burdekin River by Leichhardt. In 1881, township of Ayr was first surveyed and gazetted in 1882. The then Premier of Queensland, Sir Thomas McIllwraith named Ayr after his Scottish birthplace.
Australia’s richest sugar producing area, Ayr also has a thriving mango and melon industry. Over 280 bird species have been recorded making Ayr a bird watcher’s paradise. Ayr boasts more than 300 glorious days of sunshine each year. The Silver Link Bridge links Ayr with its twin town Home Hill across the Burdekin River. Only 10 kilometres from Ayr is Alva Beach boasting the oldest surf lifesaving club in North Queensland.

The Ayr Show is held in June each year at the Ayr Showgrounds. The annual show includes a flower display, baking and craft competition, rides and sideshow alley. An opportunity to enjoy all that Ayr has to offer.

In September, the annual Burdekin Water Festival is held at Ayr. Enjoy the street parade, Mardi Gras and International Food Fair. The whole community and visitors from throughout North Queensland join in the fun activities like the Pet and Art Shows and Garden Competition.

The Palm Creek Folk Festival is an annual event held in June at the camping grounds. Showcasing local and national artists, it is a grassroots festival with a strong family emphasis involving community and togetherness. As a part of this festival, there is also a Children’s festival and Youth Music Festival. Four days and three nights of enjoyment including concerts, dances, workshops, art and craft workshops and special events.
