Armidale Holidays Overview
Armidale is located in the heart of the New England Tablelands in New South Wales. Only two and half hours from the coast along the scenic route Waterfall Way, it is ideally placed on the New England Highway, between Sydney and Brisbane. At 980 metres above sea level, temperatures range from 0-10 degrees in winter and from 10-30 degrees in summer with Armidale’s wonderful climatic conditions providing beautiful gardens in spring and spectacular autumn colours. The history of Armidale reaches back to John Oxley who passed through the area in 1818 with the naming of the town by Commissioner MacDonald after the MacDonald family seat on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Venturing further back in time, prior to white settlement, the Anaiwan Aboriginal people called the Armidale area home. The late 1800s brought an influx of people to the area with gold discovered at Hillgrove and also the opening of the railway. Today, Armidale is a cultural and historical beacon to life in a rural town. A rural town with a difference, Armidale has been transformed into a sophisticated and cosmopolitan small city. A long established university, its strong cultural and historical base; Armidale can provide all visitors with an enriching experience. A pedestrian mall in the centre of town surrounded by cosy cafés, shopping arcades and small gift shops are enticing and absolutely worth a visit. Is your visit coinciding with the last Sunday in the month? If so, you will definitely want to stop in at the local market with its delightful art, craft, outdoor products and fresh local produce.
