In recent years, the city has been developing the river front area. Several museums are found here as are a number of historic sites. Evidence indicates that this area has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. The Creeks people were living along the river when the Spanish first arrived in 1560. During the Civil War, in the late 19th Century, the abundant plantations here were instrumental in feeding the southern Confederate Army. In 1961, local African Americans organized several protests here as part of the call for civil rights. In 2008, a Civil Rights Museum opened here commemorating the local participation in the recent African American struggle for justice. There is also a plaza dedicated to the musician Ray Charles, a son of this small southern city.
Since 2008, the historic bridge house is home to a Welcome Center providing information to visitors along a scenic section of the Flint River. It is a short ride from other places of interest such as Plains, GA, home to the 39th US President, Jimmy Carter. The closest large city is Tallahassee, Florida, which is 129 km away.
