Aberdeen Holidays Overview
Aberdeen is located in the James River Valley in northeast South Dakota. Combined with its surrounding areas, there is a total local population of roughly 40,000 people. The climate is prone to extreme highs and lows in temperature in the hottest and coldest epochs of the year. The Lakota Sioux people inhabited this area prior to it being taken over by European descendants. In the 1820s the first fur posts were settled here to trade with the aboriginals. In 1881, the town was founded with the arrival of the railroad. Ninety five percent of the population is white. Indigenous people make up some 3% and the rest are of other races and mixed backgrounds. A few performing arts organisations are based here. The downtown Recreation and Cultural Center is the hub of many performance and sporting events. The town is home to 3 golf courses, dozens of tennis courts and a skate park among other sporting facilities. There is a family swimming centre since 2007 as well as natural outdoor recreational facilities. A bus line connects to larger cities in this state and adjoining states. There are close to 1000 guest rooms for visitors and 286 campsites in all here. There are nearly 100 restaurants, take out places and coffee shops and roughly 15 bars and clubs in all. Hunting and fishing are major pastimes for locals and for many visitors. Waterfowl and big game are hunted in nearby forested areas. There are 23 parks, each one with distinct facilities and attractions. A Minor League baseball team is based here and college sports, particularly basketball, are played by both men and women. A broad variety of wildlife areas and historic sites and museum can be found a short distance from here throughout the region. The Commercial Historic District in the downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. The downtown concentrates most restaurants, entertainment and social venues.
