Ho Chi Minh City is the former capital of Vietnam, also known as Saigon, and is today a thriving city and a popular tourist destination.
The city has the largest airport in the country, Tan Son Nhat. You can also arrive by bus, with Vietnam having a great long distance bus network. There is also a train station. Driving around the city is sure to be chaotic! Bicycle can be a fun way to see the sights. Buses run through the different city areas, and speedboats operate up and down the river. Motorbike is a popular way to travel in Ho Chi Minh City. A cyclo ride offers a novel transportation experience.
One of the major city attractions is the Reunification Palace, where tanks crashed through the walls to end the war in Vietnam. The emotive and moving War Remnants Museum may still contain lots of propaganda, but provides interesting insights into the Vietnamese take on the war. Harrowing tales tell how people today are still suffering from the devastating effects of toxins dropped on the country, and the photo gallery is sure to leave you feeling rather sad. You can see gruesome and grotesque deformed foetuses, preserved in glass jars, damaged by the effects of Agent Orange. There are reconstructions of cells that prisoners were held in. There are several other museums in the city.
See a traditional water puppet show; the skill is awesome. AO Show is another terrific performance not to miss. The City Hall is a French colonial structure worth seeing. There are several religious buildings scattered around the city. Dam Sen Water Park offers excellent family fun.
There are many places to stay in the city, and visitors can find international favourites as well as traditional Vietnamese fare. The night life is loud and exciting.
