Switzerland's Geneva can seem rather stuffy and dull to begin with, but there are several great things to do and see if you dig beneath the surface. The reputation is, however, somewhat unfair, as the city is home to some real delights, many fine restaurants, and a burgeoning night scene. A crowning jewel is the beautiful Lake Geneva.
Geneva Airport operates flights to a variety of global destinations. The city is also well served by train, with services operating nationally and to other European cities. Night trains are available for longer distances. There are also good bus links. Geneva has excellent public transport around the city and surrounding areas. Boat trips are a great way to enjoy the gleaming lake, and the old town can easily be explored by foot.
Some top sights in the old town include the English Garden with its delightful flower clock and bronze fountain, Saint Peter's Cathedral, the City Hall, quaint antiques shops, and the Reformation War Memorial.
The Jet d'Eau is an enormous fountain that shoots water up to 140 metres in the air. It is great to see at night time when it is beautifully lit.
The Palais des Nationas was the home of the League of Nations. It boasts a grand Assembly Hall, lovely gardens, and a large collection of art work. Other places of interest include the Brunswick Monument, the old castle on L'Ile, the Grand Theatre, and Ille Rousseau.
Geneva is home to several good museums and a selection of pretty parks.
