Emerald, AustraliaAustralia's large and modern town of Emerald is in the state of Queensland. It is a major gateway into the Sapphire and Rubyvale Gemfields. Surrounded by agricultural land and orchards, it sees many people coming to perform seasonal fruit picking work.

There are some listed heritage sights in the town. These include the pretty and ornate Emerald Railway Station and the Capricorn Highway.

The town boasts the biggest painting of sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh. It is displayed on an easel in Moreton Park. The park is also a pretty place to relax and take a stroll. At the Town Hall you can see an interesting and unusual ancient tree – it is around 250 million years old and is now fossilised.

A little way out of the town you can visit te Fairbairn Dam. It is one of the country's largest manmade lakes and there are a number of water sports available on the waters.

There are several options for eating and drinking in Emerald.

The town has an airport, Emerald Airport, that operates flights to and from Brisbane. It can also be reached by road.
