This is the ‘spice island’, a tiny dominion off the coast of Tanzania, once ruled by the Sultan of Muscat. Strategically located near the mouth of the Persian Gulf, it has, at one time or another, been home to Egyptians, Assyrians, Portuguese, Indians, Dutch and English - all of whom were attracted to the island by the lure of trade or rich plunder. Today the island has much to interest the traveller. Apart from the various spice and fruit plantations, there is the old town, Persian Baths, the old slave market, a myriad of winding streets and labyrinthine passageways, and the Beit-al-Ajaib, or ‘House of Wonders’, the former palace of the Sultan.
