Explore Russia with Tucan on this exciting 7 day tour. See St Petersburg and Moscow!
Itinerary
Day 1 to 3
Arrive St Petersburg - Overnight Train
Day 1 is simply an arrival day with no pre-organised activities, so you will have free time to relax and see some of the sights. You may want to arrive a couple of days early to get the most out of your stay here. We begin in cosmopolitan St Petersburg, where you can take a boat trip along the rivers and canals of the city sometimes referred to as ‘Northern Venice’. You will meet with your tour leader today who will be your guide for the remainder of your time in St Petersburg. They will provide information about the tour and answer any questions. There are many sights to see in this old capital. The Winter Palace was built between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth and from the 1760s onwards it was the main residence of the Russian Tsars. Today the Winter Palace and its buildings along the river embankment, house the extensive collections of the Hermitage. The Hermitage is Russia’s biggest art gallery with its varied collection of fascinating art treasures. We take a sightseeing walk around St Petersburg with the tour leader. We take in the Nevsky Prospekt (the city’s main avenue), walk along the Griboyedov Canal, the gleaming spire of the Admiralty building and St Isaac’s Cathederal. The famous Church of the Spilt Blood is spectacular and a real contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture. It marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1st 1881. We have the day free to explore the city further, maybe take a boat trip along the rivers and canals of the city we then take the overnight train to Moscow.
Day 4 to 6
Moscow
We reach Moscow, Russia’s capital. Here we have a sightseeing walk with the tour leader visiting the Red Square, Arbat Street’s souvenir stalls and all the famous sights. The Red Square (Krasnaja Ploshad) was a market place during the fifteenth century and acquired its present name in the seventeenth century. Red does not refer to Communism but derives from the old Russian word 'krasniy' meaning beautiful. It is known for its May Day parades during the Soviet regime and is the site of Lenin's Mausoleum. The afternoon is your own to explore Moscow further with plenty of time for a visit to the Izmailovsky Market (a famous flea market) or spend an evening at the circus or the world-renowned Russian ballet. We visit the Moscow Kremlin* where we will help you get your tickets. The Kremlin is UNESCO World Heritage listed as the site of Russia’s political and historical heritage since the 13th century, housing both royalty and religion. The Kremlin wall contains a mass grave of Bolsheviks who perished during the battle for Moscow in 1917, together with the ashes of a number of well-known Russians, including writer Maxim Gorky and Yuriy Gagarin, the first Russian man in space. Your afternoon is free to continue your exploration of Moscow. Our last day in Russia is free to explore and do some last minute shopping before departing the city. A useful word to know is ‘skolka’ or ‘how much?’. For a novel experience, why not take a look inside Moscow’s Metro? More than a people-moving system, it’s a network of beautifully and artistically decorated stations (Please note you will need to pay for own metro tickets).
Day 7 to 7
Depart Moscow
You may want to add a couple of extra days on to the end of your tour to ensure you get the most out of your time here. Our tour will conclude on day 7.
