Mediterranean Molto Mediterranean! Being the place we call our home, MSC Cruises takes special pride in guiding you throught the Mediterranean's most exquiste and hidden corners of history, culture and nature in the land of Roman baths, crumbling ruins, Napolean's birthplace and sun-baked villages that are all part of the vastly diverse Mediterranean seaside.
Highlights Include:
Genoa Famous as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Genoa remains a bustling seaport. The city's Renaissance heritage is preserved in splendid palaces overlooking the harbor. Visit the nearby seaside resort of Portofino.
Athens The port of Piraeus is one of the last old-style Mediterranean ports from where you can catch ferries to all of the Greek islands and travel a short distance to Athens, the capital city of Greece. Athens is an ancient city, steeped in many centuries of history. It may not be the most attractive or appealing city in the world, but if you look just a little bit harder you will see the charming, exciting and vibrant city of Athens appear. Athens has an enormous amount to offer both tourists and business travelers alike.
Istanbul Part of Istanbul’s great attraction is its unique position on two continents, divided by the Bosphorus. Most of the population live on the European side; the Asian sector is reached via the high-level Bosphorus Bridge, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge or by ferry. With 13 million inhabitants Istanbul offers all the excitement of a cosmopolitan city. Its numerous monuments, mosques and museums, plus the famous Grand Bazaar, make it one of the world’s great destinations.
Katakolon Katakolon is your gateway to Greece and the ancient Olympic Games. In Greece, see where the athletes took the Olympic oath, the Gymnasium and the original Stadium. Also, take an opportunity to see Greek sculpture in the nearby museum.
Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city (after the capital Cairo) is worth a visit for its many cultural attractions and memories of a glorious past. It remains an important city, as Egypt's chief seaport on the Mediterranean and a home to at least 3.5 million Egyptians. The city centre now stretches back from Midan Saad Zaghloul , on the seafront, where there is a statue of the nationalist leader. This was formerly the site of the Caesareum, a magnificet begun by Cleopatra for her lover Antony and subsequently completed by their enemy Octavian and dedicated to himself. Very little evidence remains of the ancient city founded by Alexander the Great. Attractions include the Greco-Roman Museum, the Roman Amphitheatre at Kom al-Dikkah and the Catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa.
Heraklion Home of the great Minoan civilization and the mythological home of Zeus, Crete is the largest and the most rugged of the Greek Islands. The mountains in the north are a breathtaking backdrop to long sandy beaches, verdant vineyards and olive groves. Heraklion, one of the two main ports on the island, was once the harbor for Knossos, the largest palace and most powerful Minoan center on the island. |
