Dakar is the capital city of Africa's Senegal. Local people are very warm and welcoming, and pride themselves on showing hospitality to all.
Dakar can be accessed via the small but busy Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport. International flights connect the capital to other African cities as well as places in North America, Asia, and Europe. The main way of moving around within the country is in a small truck with seven seats. These are known as sept places. They may not be comfortable, but sometimes there will be little alternative. The main station is Gare Routieres de Pompiers. In Dakar there are some bus services, as well as mini buses and taxis.
A must see landmark is the enormous African Renaissance Monument. A new construction, it marks the end of slavery and Africa's freedom from Europe.
Ile de Goree is a nice spot to visit. On the island you can see some great examples of colonial architecture and visit the House of Slaves Museum. It has a pleasant beach, a relaxed atmosphere, and a number of lovely small eateries. It can be reached by ferry, which will take around 15 minutes.
There are many excellent seafood restaurants at Les Almadies, the most western tip of the African continent.
Dakar is home to both a cathedral and a mosque, and both are worth a vist.
Other sights in and around the city include the IFAN Museum of African Arts, Hann Park and Zoo, and the pink Lake Retba. The area is perfect for bird watching.
Dakar has a very lively music scene. Relax with a Gazelle Beer and enjoy some great sounds.
