Australia's small town of Coober Pedy is in South Australia's Outback. It is very remote, with the nearest settlements lying hundreds of kilometres away. Adelaide is some 850 kilometres from the town. It is famous for opal mining. Whilst there are some street level buildings, many people have made their homes and businesses in caves carved into the rocks to escape the high temperatures and harsh weather conditions. This alone makes for an interesting visit!
Several mines have been opened to the public as tourist attractions. They provide a fascinating insight into the industry and life below ground. The Old Timers Mine is a good starting point. Crocodile Harry's Home is a favourite attraction. He lived in an old mine and had a somewhat eccentric hobby – he collected bras! In his old mine home you can see his collection of bras, along with photos of the women who gave them to him. Opal fossicking is another popular activity in the town.
Umoona Opal Museum and the Desert Cave Hotel Museum have interesting exhibits and displays.
Other local places of interest include the Serbian Orthodox church, St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and the Graveyard. You can go underground at the spooky Catacomb Church.
Breakaways Reserve is a desolate, fascinating, slightly eerie, and slightly magical area of rocks and sweeping plateaus. It feels like you are walking on the moon!
Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage is home to kangaroos and aboriginal items and works of art.
Coober Pedy Airport has flights to and from Adelaide. Buses also make the long trip to Adelaide, as well as to Alice Springs. The Ghan train also runs to Adelaide and Alice Springs. There is little by way of public transport in the town, but many places are easy to walk between and there are several tours available.
