China's Chongqing is one of the so called Three Furnaces – renowned for its hot temperatures, hot and spicy food, and, as some locals say, fiery tempers! Along the edges of the mighty Yangtze River, it is a starting point for many scenic cruises passing through the Yangtze Dam and Three Gorges. It is a lively and fast growing city.
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport serves a variety of domestic and international destinations. The city can be accessed by train and there are three main train stations; Chongqing Station, Chongqing North Station, and Chongqing West Station. Buses connect the city to almost all other parts of the country.
Public transport includes the subway, a monorail, and buses. It can be tricky to get around, however, using public transport because of language barriers. Taxis are readily available.
Chongqing Zoo has a large group of pandas. There are also small, cute red pandas, and a variety of other animals. Chongqing is known for its hot springs.
Some of the main sites around Chongqing include leading Communist Zhou Enlai's Old Residence, the beautiful and ornate Great Hall of the People, the Three Gorges Museum, Qixia Temple, the large square at Chaotianmen, and the Joseph Stilwell Residence. Lizaba Park is home to many old and well preserved buildings. Another interesting place to visit is Song Qing Ling's Residence. Qing Ling was married to Sun Yat Sen, the founder of modern China. Jiang Jieshi was the military headquarters during the Second World War, when the capital of China was situated in Chongqing. Zha Zi Dong was a prison. It provides a shocking insight into the horrors committed against communist political prisoners within the prison's walls.
In Hong YaDong you can see many delightful old buildings hugging the side of a mountain. Red Rock Village is another popular tourist site, and it is steeped in historical significance. At Ciqikou you can take a step back in time and experience the Chongqing of old.
The aptly named Foreigner Street is crammed with non-Chinese businesses. There are shops, bars, restaurants, and more. Chongqing Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street is at the commercial heart of the city.
