Cebu is a city on the island of the same name in the Philippines. It is one of the most visited destinations in the island country, and mixes historical sites and pristine beaches.
Mactan Cebu International Airport is the second busiest airport in the Philippines, and is a major gateway into Cebu. It is situated on an adjacent island, Mactan Island, but it is easy to get to Cebu. The port is the busiest in the country. To get around Cebu, buses and colourful jeepneys operate on certain routes. Taxis are also widely available.
Cebu offers a wide range of places to stay. It is developing quickly, and thus also has numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. There is a large street food culture, with many cheap eats available. Cebu has a lively night scene – party lovers will not be disappointed!
The large Basilica del Santa Nino is a major attraction in Cebu. It houses a statue of the Holy Child that is believed to be one of the Philippines' oldest religious relics. Having survived a fire unscathed, it is also thought to have miraculous properties. Fort San Pedro is another main sight. It was a Spanish outpost during the days of colonial rule. On Colon Street you can see American era architecture. It is also the oldest road in the country.
The top of Mount Busay provides excellent views of the area. Other places from which you can admire the Cebu skyline include Second Mactan Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridge.
There are several museums. Crocolandia is great for kids. A unique place to visit is the prison, where you can mingle and chat with the inmates. The Taoist Temple provides a glimpse into the Chinese community's influence in the city.
There are some gorgeous beaches within easy reach of Cebu, some busy and some fairly quiet. You can also enjoy snorkelling and diving. Bird watching is another favourite outdoor activity.
