Calcutta is the former name of India's Kolkata, although the city is still often referred to by its previous title. It is enormous and unapolegetically brash. Whether you love Kolkata or despise it, you certainly cannot ignore it! It can simultaneously delight and shock visitors, and is a major cultural centre. The best months to visit are between November and February, when temperatures are slightly cooler and more tolerable. Summers can be extremely harsh.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport operates flights to both international and domestic destinations. Trains link Kolkata to most of the large stations in India and Bangladesh's Dhaka , and buses also run to Dhaka and various places within India.
There is an extensive public transport system, with trams, a metro, trains, buses, and ferry services. Shared auto rickshaws run on set routes, and for private transport there are taxis, rickshaws, and auto rickshaws. It is also possible to hire a car with a driver.
Some main Kolkata attractions include Science City, the Marble Palace, the Race Course, and Outram Ghat. Others are the Victoria Memorial, a British attempt at imitating the Taj Mahal, the large Shahid Minar tower, and the Town Hall.
Museums, churches, and temples are sprinkled across the city. Younger visitors will enjoy the zoo and planetarium. Fort William is an imposing sight. Built in the early 1770s, it is still in use to today. It can therefore only be seen from outside. It sits in a large, leafy park called the Maidan.
Kolkata has a great dining scene, as well as numerous pubs and night clubs.
