Brussels is the capital city of Belgium, and the unofficial capital of the European Union. The numerous EU buildings and staff have created a very multicultural city. Additionally, Brussels is at the point where the Northern German influences and the Southern Romance influences meet. Despite the many different nationalities represented in Brussels, however, it does manage to have its own sense of identity and some very charming traits.
You can get to Brussels via Brussels Airport or Brussels South Carleroi Airport, as well as by train or bus. The main city sights are reasonably close to each other, meaning that walking is a good way to sightsee in Brussels. Public transport is available for those areas outside of the main parts of the city.
Places in Brussels have a duel naming system, using both French and Dutch.
The Grand Place / Grote Markt is a visual feast, surrounded by beautifully ornate and grand old buildings and the fine city tower. The square is lit up at night time, and the lights glint off the buildings creating a truly breath taking sight. There are several museums and cafes sprinkled around the square.
The Mannekin Pis is an interesting and unusual old statue near to the grand Place / Grote Markt; it depicts a young boy urinating! A newer statue and fountain, Jeanneke Pis, was created to show a girl squatting and peeing – another of Brussel's unusual sights!
An unmissable, iconic, and instantly recognisable landmark in the capital is the large sculture, Atomium. You can visit the upper sphere for amazing views, and the other spheres are home to various attractions.
Great views can also be admired from atop the Arc de Triomphe / Triomfboog.
Other major places to see when visiting Brussels include the opulent Royal Palace, Mini Europe, the enormous law courts, the large basilica, and the Statue of Europe. There are also many museums and galleries to enjoy in Brussels. With Belgian beer famous worldwide, you should definitely try and visit a brewery. At the very least, try some of the many national beers in a variety of bars, pubs, and hole in the wall drinking establishments. Chocolate is another not-to-be-missed speciality.
