Birmingham Flights Guide

Birmingham, United KingdomOnce the grubby hub of Victorian industry, Birmingham is now reinventing itself as a modern, sophisticated city. It's home to some of the best shopping outside of London, and a lively nightlife scene that ranges from crowded pubs to trendy nightclubs. Birmingham's city centre was largely destroyed during WWII but since the 1990s, the city's slapdash post-war buildings have been gradually revamped and modernized. Nicknamed “Brum”, this city's literary heritage boasts names like JRR Tolkien, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Washington Irving. Birmingham is also known as the city that brought the world HP Sauce and Cadbury chocolate. It's still not the UK's prettiest city, but some creative architectural re-styling is helping to transform this ugly duckling city into a swan.

Birmingham offers a well-connected network of local buses, trams, and trains. You can also take a water taxi along the city's canals or rent a bike and take advantage of the excellent cycle paths.

Birmingham might lack the historic charm of many of the UK's other cities, but there are still plenty of ways for tourists to keep entertained. Symphony Hall features a variety of concerts from jazz and classical, to spoken word performances and educational presentations. There's also the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, which is home to a fascinating collection of 19th-century art, including pieces by Simone Martini and Bellini. The Birmingham Back-to-Backs, the last remaining back-to-back houses in Birmingham, are another popular attraction. Of course, you can't visit the home of Cadbury chocolate without taking a tour of Cadbury World. The tour presents a history of chocolate and the Cadbury Company, and there are some very welcome free samples at the end.

Birmingham's Bull Ring is one of the UK's largest shopping centers, with over 160 shops, including famous Selfridge's department store. Other popular shopping areas nearby include the Pavilions, the Mailbox, and the Pallasades. You'll also find a mishmash of chain stores and discount outlets on New Street, High Street and Corporation Street. Birmingham is known as the balti capital of England, making this dish a must-try when visiting Brum. Invented in Birmingham in 1977, balti is curry served in a thin, wok-like “balti bowl”.
