Kalemegdan was once and important and strategic fortress, but today it is the central city park. You can wander around the old walls and relax in the pretty park. There are also museums, cafes, tennis courts, an observatory, and basketball courts. The zoo is also within the fortress compound. Republic Square serves as the city's main meeting point. The opulent Town Hall was once a Royal Palace. Other palaces in the city include the White Palace and the New Palace.

Take a stroll along Knez Mihailova Street and Skadarlija. Both streets are pedestrianised and contain a wide selection of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

Other places of interest include Terazijie Fountain, and the National Theatre. There are numerous pretty churches and other religious buildings around the city, which include Belgrade Cathedral, St Mark's Church, and the Church of St Alexander Nevsky. The Cathedral of Saint Sava is Serbia's biggest Orthodox church.

There are also several great museums and galleries to visit. Some of the best include the National Museum, the Historical Museum of Serbia, the Gallery of Frescoes, the Museum of the History of Yugoslavia, the Museum of Roma Culture, The Residence of Princess Ljubica , and the Nikola Tesla Museum.

Serbian cuisine is delicious and features lots of grilled meats, cheeses, and bread. There are many places to dine in the city, as well as a rich and varied night life.
