Spain's Barcelona is a cultural dream, with many fabulous attractions scattered liberally across the city. It is also very close to some glorious beaches, such as Barceloneta and Merbella beach.
Perhaps one of the most striking city sights is the large and unusual La Sagrada Familia. One of Gaudi's unfinished masterpieces, it is nonetheless a top city attraction. Visit some of Gaudi's other great works in and around the city, including the romantic Casa Batllo, the castle-like Bellesguard, the vibrant and colourful Park Guell, the Arab-like Casa Vicens, the wonderful Finca Guell, and the rather plain in comparison Colegio Teresiano.
You can also visit the city's historic square, the Place de Saint Felipe Neri. Stroll the animated and bustling main street, the Ramblas. Visit the Olympic Stadium. Soak up some culture at the Picasso Museum. See the city's cathedrals.
For incredible views of Barcelona, climb Montjuic Hill, where you will also find a charming traditional village and a lovely park.
Barcelona has an airport, and is well connected by road and rail to the rest of the country and beyond. To get around the city there is a good transportation network, although walking is a great way to see the main sights. Open top bus tours are another popular way to visit the main attractions.
Dining options are varied, although eating in a traditional tapas bar at least once is recommended. Barcelona offers a mixed night life. Head to the Gothic Quarter for smaller and more intimate bars.
