Haikou is served by its Haikou Melian Airport which is located at a distance of 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the center of Haikou.Haikou hosts a large number of domestic and international airlines. This airport was opened in 1999 to replace the older Haikou Dayingshan Airport.
 
Haikou airport is equipped with one of the tallest air traffic control towers in Asia and it is built to resemble the traditional homes of the Li people. This picturesque airport which is set amidst much greenery extends over 25 acres and is connected to a wide array of domestic and international destinations.
 
Haikou airport is equipped with elaborate lounges that are adorned with local arte-facts and textiles which are a showcase for the local culture. These lounges can be accessed by the general public on the payment of a nominal fee. Additionally the airport is also equipped with the usual passenger facilities like restaurants, car parks and duty free shops.
